Overview of Interests
Much of Katherine Gotham's previous research sought to improve the accuracy and extend the utility of common autism diagnostic instruments. Over the past several years, she has shifted focus to study of the role of affect and reward in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Her current work focuses on depression as a leading source of clinical impairment in adolescents and adults on the autism spectrum. Dr. Gotham hopes to use behavioral, psychophysiological, and biological measures and methods to identify shared mechanisms across ASD and depression, and to come to understand pathways along which affect dysregulation and depressed mood develop within ASD. In line with the VKC Mission to improve quality of life in individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders, her ultimate goal is to translate mechanistic research to assessment and treatment protocols that promote emotional health across the lifespan in ASD.
