Autism spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex, brain-based disorder that is characterized by (1) impairments in reciprocal social communication and social interaction and (2) by restricted or unusual patterns of activities or interests. Symptoms of ASD appear early in life but the specific pattern of behaviors and the severity of the effect on daily life differs from person to person. There is also great variation in cognitive skills, with some individuals with ASD having an intellectual disability and others having very advanced cognitive skills. Individualized interventions are important to promote optimal social interaction, communication, learning, and functioning in the family and community.
