Tennessee Social Skills Cooperative




Purpose: Vanderbilt’s Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) and Tennessee Behavior Supports Project (TBSP) are partnering to develop a virtual Social Skills Cooperative (TN-SCC) with several schools across Tennessee. The TN-SCC will use online learning tools and remote coaching to help school-based teams plan, implement, and monitor social skills instruction as a Tier II intervention within a multi-tiered system of supports.

Expected Participants:

Schools currently implementing RTI2-B Tier II. Teams should include:

  • Administrator (e.g., principal, assistant principal):
    • Oversees decisions around school policies and procedures
  • Tier II System Coordinator:
    • Supervises Tier II interventions, including Check-In Check-Out
  • Social skills Intervention Coordinator (e.g., school guidance counselor, speech-language pathologist, instructional coach):
    • Manages the social skills intervention
      • Responsible for providing practice-based coaching support to educators implementing social skills interventions
      • Primary contact for TN-SSC support
  • Facilitators (e.g., school guidance counselor, speech-language pathologist, special education teacher, general education teacher, related arts teacher):
    • Deliver social skills intervention
Requirements:
  • Complete an application and participate in interview process.
  • Complete online courses and assignments according to established timeline.
    • Be comfortable accessing online platform and downloading and uploading materials to platform.
  • Prepare materials and implement a social skills intervention to a group of students.
  • Participate in practice-based coaching focused on the implementation of social skills intervention:
    • Willingness and capacity to use video-conferencing software (e.g. Zoom).
    • Ability to meet with consultants for approximately twice a month.
  • Share skills, knowledge, and experiences by collaborating during virtual learning community meetings.
Training Topics:
  • Strategies and supports to develop a Tier II Social skills intervention system including:
    • Guidelines and decision rules for using data to screen and identify students in need of social skills intervention at a Tier II level.
    • Training on evidence-based instructional strategies related to social skills.
